You must be extremely careful when submitting the new declaration, the risk of sanctions is just around the corner.

The tax return is a mandatory tax obligation through which citizens communicate to the Revenue Agency their earnings and the related taxes due. It is a fundamental document for the Italian tax authorities , which allows for the precise calculation of the amount of taxes that each taxpayer must pay.

This obligation is annual. Every taxpayer is required to submit their tax return within specific deadlines established by tax law, generally between spring and summer of the year following the year of reference of the income. Respecting these deadlines is crucial to avoid sanctions.

Filing a tax return has several implications. First of all, it allows you to regularize your tax position with the State. Based on the data declared, the Revenue Agency calculates the final tax: if the taxes already paid are higher than those due, the taxpayer will be entitled to a refund.

Filing a tax return is a requirement for accessing many public services and benefits, since the ISEE, often required for such benefits, is also calculated on the basis of declared income . It is therefore an act of transparency and a pillar of the tax system.

Tax deductions and allowances

Deductions and allowances are tax mechanisms that allow taxpayers to reduce the amount of taxes due. Deductions work by reducing the taxable base, or the income on which the tax is calculated. This means that once a deduction is applied , the taxable income decreases, and consequently also the gross tax.

Deductions, on the other hand, operate directly on the gross tax already calculated. Once the tax has been established, deductions reduce the final amount. Among the most common deductions are those for dependent children, for health expenses , for passive interests on mortgages.

Beware of the very heavy fines

The Revenue Agency leaves nothing to chance: the tax authorities carry out rigorous checks on tax returns submitted by taxpayers. The aim is to verify the correspondence between what is declared and the real economic situation, combating tax evasion and ensuring fairness.

Anyone who declares an income lower than the real one or illegally inflates deductions and tax credits risks very heavy penalties. The law provides for fines ranging from 90% to 180% of the unpaid tax, a significant deterrent against tax fraud. Although such high penalties are rare and linked to cases of serious and proven tax evasion, the message is clear: fiscal honesty is a must and the Revenue Agency is equipped with increasingly sophisticated tools to uncover irregularities.
