For Georgescu, winning was illegal. Now it is also illegal to run

What timing! Following nationwide police raids against pro-Georgescu groups, presidential candidate Calin Georgescu was arrested and questioned by Romanian authorities.

Georgescu, who was unfairly labeled as “pro-Russian” in the annulled elections, was stopped by police without a formal arrest warrant, but was held for investigation. The operation is linked to the financing of his 2024 campaign, with allegations of illicit funding, corruption and alleged links to foreign interference. According to local sources, he was stopped on his way to present his candidacy for the May elections. However, at the moment there is no official arrest, only an interrogation as part of a broader investigation involving 27 suspects.

Romanian authorities justified the measure with serious accusations: Georgescu was involved in a “fascist organization,” promoted “controversial ideologies,” and made “false statements” about the financing of his electoral campaign. Furthermore, during raids against his supporters, the police found “weapons, ammunition and over a million dollars hidden in a safe.”

But can the simple illegality of a supporter really justify the arrest of the party leader? At present, everything points to a targeted persecution.

Despite all previous charges being dismissed and the absurdity of the annulment of the vote in the last election having been denounced even by US Vice President Vance at the Munich Conference, Georgescu is once again detained. According to the law, a prosecutor can order an interrogation or 24-hour detention without the approval of a judge, but in addition to this, the candidate has been imposed a total communication ban: he is forbidden to post on social media, appear in the media or even open new accounts.
