Women's League Playoffs. "We need to be smarter about team fouls": Reactions after Basket Landes' defeat at Charnay

By Collected by Marjorie Queuille, special correspondent

The Landaises regretted the small errors made against an opponent who did not give up, while the Burgundians were determined to force their destiny after their victory in the first semi-final (67-63)

"We knew that Charnay was having a great season and even though they were missing two very important players (Coralie Chabrier, injured, and Monique Akoa Makani, who left for a WNBA camp in the United States, Editor's note), we knew that there would be other players who would take over. We expected it to be difficult. We made too many individual and collective errors, it's up to us to correct them for the return match. I can't say why or how, each player has their own way of reacting to things individually. The fact is that there were things that weren't done when they were asked, so we'll have to correct that. It was a real battle on both sides, we took 20 but they only took 13 (fouls, Editor's note). It was still a blast on both sides." We'll have to be smarter when we have four team fouls, or provoke them more, perhaps: these are the things we'll have to control more, not put people on free throws too quickly when we're far away."

Stéphane Leite (Charnay coach)

"That fourth quarter was tough! We knew it because we left a lot of rubber, we played with six professional players, even if the young players did a pretty good job to help out. But it was very long (smile) because at the end we couldn't remember the game patterns. We didn't have a professional point guard in this match and at the end, you could feel it. With fatigue, staying lucid throughout the match is tough. And we were facing a team that was at -11 and couldn't leave at -11 because that would have left us with more than hope. We lost our best rating, we lost our starting point guard and I have girls who were able to lead an incredible game of energy for 40 minutes. So I only feel pride today." Not many people thought we would win, and the girls believed in it. They followed my slightly crazy plan for this match, and it worked. We told ourselves all week that we had to believe in it. They were rewarded."
