Wimbledon: Lois Boisson denied invitation, why it's (only) a half-disappointment

DECRYPTION - The Roland-Garros revelation will have to go through qualifying to reach the main draw at Wimbledon. The difficult climb up the ladder begins.

The All England Club likes to cultivate its uniqueness, which is part of its charm. Until 2021, the highly select club had the distinction of naming the top seeds (women and men) for the prestigious Wimbledon tournament not based on world rankings but on grass-court performances. In 2019, Rafael Nadal grimaced after slipping down the rankings.

Sovereign, the Wimbledon organizers proceeded this Wednesday to the allocation of invitations for the famous tournament (June 30-July 13). Loïs Boisson, devoid of the slightest reference on grass, hoped that her crazy adventure at Roland-Garros (semi-finalist, stopped, out of breath, by Coco Gauff the future winner), started in 361st place, concluded in 67th place in the world after having eliminated 3 seeds, including 2 Top 10 (Jessica Pegula and Mirra Andreeva), would open the doors to the main draw for her.

The Lyonnaise will have to go through qualifying . She will have to go through three rounds before experiencing her second Grand Slam tournament. Only a half-disappointment. While the French Federation has agreements with the Australian Open and the US Open to reserve invitations, there is no equivalent with Wimbledon. And, true to form, the All England Club has awarded 7 of its 8 invitations to British players (members of the Top 200 or young hopefuls): Jodie Burrage, Harriet Dart, Francesca Jones, Hannah Klugman, Mika Stojsavljevic, Heather Watson, Mingge Xu. The last one was awarded to Czech Petra Kvitova (winner of the tournament in 2011 and 2016) who put her career on hold to give birth to her son Petr, before returning to competition in February.

Loïs Boisson will have to shine on the courts of Roehampton, a few kilometers from the All England Club. Hopefully, she'll discover those of Wimbledon, a few kilometers away. To continue the wild momentum born at Roland-Garros...
