The Tour de France begins Saturday, July 5th in Lille, for an all-French edition. The last Frenchman to win the Tour in 1985, Bernard Hinault left a major void by retiring a year later, a void that no Frenchman has managed to fill in four decades. This year again, the French are holding out few illusions, perhaps hoping for a brighter future.
