Tennis: Monfils eliminated in the first round in Dubai

Italian Matteo Berrettini eliminated the Frenchman in the first round of the ATP 500 in Dubai on Tuesday.

Frenchman Gaël Monfils, world number 40 ( ATP ranking ), lost on Tuesday to Italian Matteo Berrettini (7-5, 6-4), world number 30, in the first round of the ATP 500 in Dubai. Reached twice in the first set after taking the Frenchman's serve, Matteo Berrettini ended up winning 7-5 after 48 minutes at the end of a set that was dominated overall.

There was, however, little suspense in the second set where Berrettini raced ahead to claim his fourth victory in as many encounters against the Frenchman. Having defeated Novak Djokovic last week at the Doha tournament, the Italian will face Australian Christopher O'Connell (world number 75) in the round of 16.
