Tennis: At Wimbledon, Coco Gauff, world number 2, eliminated in the first round

World number 2 Coco Gauff, who won her second Grand Slam title at Roland Garros in early June, was eliminated on Tuesday, July 1 , in her first match at Wimbledon. The 21-year-old American was beaten (7-6 [7-3], 6-1) by Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska ( 42nd ), a few weeks after being eliminated from the WTA 500 in Berlin, and thus ends her short grass-court season without a single victory.
Yastremska, formerly ranked 21st in the world and a semi-finalist at the 2024 Australian Open, won her first match against Gauff in four confrontations and will face the Russian Anastasia Zakharova ( 95th ), who came through qualifying, in the next round.
This is only the third time in the Open era that the Roland-Garros winner has lost in the first round of Wimbledon in the same year, after Belgium's Justine Henin in 2005 and Italy's Francesca Schiavone in 2010. Wimbledon is the Grand Slam tournament that has been the least successful for Gauff, who has never reached beyond the round of 16.
