Premier League: Liverpool win against Newcastle before facing PSG

Liverpool beat Newcastle 2-0 on Wednesday to extend their lead over Arsenal to 13 points on Wednesday in the Premier League, a week before facing Paris SG in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16. The Reds will be able to prepare for their trip to the Parc des Princes with a light mind, following a controlled victory against the Magpies.

Domonik Szoboszlai opened the scoring by exploiting a back pass from Luis Diaz (11th), before the 2-0 signed by Alexis Mac Allister (63rd) after a nice number in the box by Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian fixed the defense and served his teammate with a delicious outside of the foot to offer himself a 17th assist in the championship, in addition to his 25 goals.

Liverpool have 67 points and a game in hand over their runner-up Arsenal (2nd, 54 pts), who were held 0-0 earlier at Nottingham Forest (3rd, 48 pts). Newcastle (44 pts) are in sixth place, three points behind Manchester City, the last current member of the Top-4. The Magpies had to play at Anfield without their centre-forward Alexander Isak, who was weakened by a "slight groin discomfort", according to the club.
