Ligue 2: Favorites, outsiders, Red Star's ambitions... Everything you need to know before the start of the 2025-2026 season

The French Ligue 2 Championship resumes this Saturday, August 9. Red Star, the only representative from the Paris region, is making a difficult trip to one of the relegated Ligue 1 teams, Montpellier.
By Laurent Pruneta (with Arnaud Detout)There will only be eight matches on this first day of Ligue 2. After the false promises of AC Ajaccio, who tried to gain time by stretching out the deadline to appeal their demotion to the CNOSF before giving up due to lack of funds, the LFP only officially re-elected Boulogne-sur-Mer this Thursday . Their first match against Bastia was logically postponed to September 16.
With prestigious relegated teams (Saint-Étienne, Montpellier, Reims) and many teams looking to move up, Ligue 2 will once again be highly competitive this season. In this highly competitive environment, Red Star, 15th last year, will be aiming for a more secure survival.
