According to a press release from Mayor Philippe Bouyssou, published on the website of the town of Ivry-sur-Seine (Val de Marne), the fire broke out in the afternoon, during "a technical intervention which was part of the renovation project of the gymnasium, frequented by generations of Ivry residents since 1953" .
Although there was "very significant damage" to report, the fire did not cause any injuries.
"We will try to return this equipment as quickly as possible to the sports associations and the people of Ivry," the press release continued, with a photo of the damage observed inside the hall as support.
The city also indicated that it was working with the associations and the club to "find alternatives allowing them to continue their activities in the coming months."
"This date is now a moving part of the history of Delaune, the heritage of handball, and of our Club," reacted US Ivry, whose next home match in the championship was scheduled for March 8 against Créteil.
The Val de Marne club has won eight French men's championship titles between 1963 and 2007 and nine women's titles between 1958 and 1977.
