Champions League: Results and standings after the first day

Champions League week, and nothing but clashes on the agenda. For the French clubs, the biggest challenge was undoubtedly Olympique de Marseille. The Olympians, 4-0 winners over Lorient in the league, traveled to the Bernabeu to face the legendary Real Madrid. Despite good intentions, OM came up against Mbappé, who scored twice, including a penalty described as "shameful" by the OM coach. For Paris, with a much-depleted squad after a string of injuries, the job was done against the Italians of Atalanta Bergamo at the Parc des Princes with a 4-0 victory. Finally, Monaco may have the "easiest" opponent when they travel to Bruges this Thursday.
The League phase rankingThe new-look Champions League is entering its second season. The principle is simple: each team plays eight matches, four at home and four away, against different opponents each time between September 16 and January 28. They accumulate points for an overall ranking. At the end of this phase, the top eight teams earn direct tickets to the round of 16 of the competition. Teams ranked 9th to 24th will have to go through a home-and-away play-off at the end of February to have any hope of qualifying. The bottom twelve are eliminated.
