Automobile: Manufacturers advocate for small models

In an interview with Le Figaro, the bosses of Stellantis and Renault are calling for a relaxation of European standards to allow them to produce popular cars again.
The automotive market is in turmoil. Worse, for the European industry, the warning lights are red. In an interview with Le Figaro, the heads of Stellantis and Renault are calling for a relaxation of European standards to build more popular and affordable cars. While 18 million vehicles were sold in Europe in 2019, only 15 million will be sold by 2024.
Meanwhile, prices have soared. “Today, a small electric car costs 35,000 euros, with subsidies 30,000. We're still not at the 20,000 euros that was the reference price for a small combustion engine vehicle,” notes a dealer in the Paris region. In March 2025, the French car market was down nearly 15% compared to the same period last year.
