After Gregg Popovich's departure, Mitch Johnson will remain the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs

Following the departure of Gregg Popovich, which was announced this Friday , the San Antonio Spurs have officially named Mitch Johnson, previously interim coach, as head coach of the franchise for next season. In the 2024-25 season, he led the Texan franchise 77 times and finished in thirteenth place in the Western Conference , for a total of 32 wins and 45 losses - removing the five games coached by Popovich, in which he won two games and lost three.
"We are thrilled to have Mitch Johnson as our next head coach. Over his 10 years, we have seen that Mitch has the values, poise, and potential to lead us into the future," said franchise owner Peter John Holt. Details of Johnson's contract were not released by San Antonio.
Johnson joined the Texas franchise in 2016 as an assistant coach with the Austin Spurs, San Antonio's G-League affiliate. He notably contributed to the 2018 championship title, then spent the last six seasons as an assistant coach on Popovich's staff.
