United States: Customs duties: EU suspends retaliatory measures after Donald Trump deal
Donald Trump has finally won the trade dispute he initiated with the European Union, with Brussels suspending its retaliatory measures on Tuesday.
Brussels announced on Tuesday that it was suspending its retaliation for Donald Trump 's tariffs, due to the trade agreement between the United States and the EU . In recent months, the Commission had prepared a list of American products that would be taxed if the United States and the EU failed to reach an agreement. This list included 93 billion euros worth of goods: soybeans, airplanes, cars, etc.
After months of tough negotiations, Brussels and Washington sealed a trade deal at the end of July based on 15% tariffs on European products arriving in the United States. "The Commission has today adopted the necessary legal procedure to suspend the implementation of our European countermeasures," said Olof Gill, a spokesperson for the European executive, on Tuesday.
The European Union, however, has not ruled out reactivating these countermeasures if the trade standoff with the Trump administration takes new turns. "We're putting [these measures] back on ice, but we can always bring them out again," explained a European official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
