On Sunday, May 11, several thousand demonstrators marched in Paris against Islamophobia and to pay tribute to Aboubakar Cissé, a young Muslim killed two weeks ago in a mosque in the Gard department. The procession included representatives of La France Insoumise, including Jean-Luc Mélenchon. But the real question is: is this a real fight for the party or is it a political recovery?

"Do not forget, nor forgive the murder of Aboubakar Cissé." Several thousand protesters took to the streets of Paris to pay tribute to the man who was murdered on April 25th in a mosque in Grande Combe (Gard). The rally aimed to denounce the rise of Islamophobia in France. " We know the causes of this Islamophobic crime because Islamophobia begins with words and ends with atrocious acts like this ," said one protester.

Leading the march was Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who did not speak, along with several prominent figures from La France Insoumise, such as Éric Coquerel. The party has made the fight against Islamophobia a key issue. “ France has become the site of a certain form of racism, hiding behind a conflict between religions, because of those who lead us, ” asserts the LFI deputy. This LFI positioning divides the political class. For some, particularly on the right, such as Laurent Wauquiez, the party is exploiting and co-opting this issue to distinguish itself from its opponents and win over voters.
