In Libya, the Dbeibah government weakened after clashes between militias
The National Unity Government, headed by Abdel Hamid Dbeibah, is under fire following fighting between armed groups that rocked the capital, Tripoli, and resulted in the death of a militia leader. There are calls for Dbeibah's withdrawal and the formation of a new government.
The Libyan capital, Tripoli, has been the scene of violent armed clashes between rival militias following the death on May 12 of Abdelghani El-Kikli, known as “Gheniwa.” The latter, leader of the powerful SSA (Stability Support Apparatus) militia, was “assassinated,” reports the pan-Arab newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat . At odds with the government, the militiaman is described as a former drug offender who became a militia leader after the death of dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
Abdelghani El-Kikli's death occurred during a firefight at the headquarters of another Libyan militia, Brigade 444, an ally of the Government of National Unity (GNU), headed by Abdel Hamid Dbeibah . Deadly fighting continued in the capital in the following days, weakening Tripoli's power.
