French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte will pay a state visit to the United Kingdom from July 8 to 10, at the invitation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, whom they hosted in France two years earlier, the Élysée Palace announced Tuesday. "During this state visit, the President of the Republic will co-chair the 37th Franco-British Summit with Mr. Keir Starmer, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, in the presence of the relevant ministers from our two countries," the presidency said in a statement.
Received with great pomp at Versailles in September 2023, King Charles III urged the French and British to "reinvigorate their friendship," which had been tarnished by Brexit. That same year, Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak chaired the first Franco-British summit in five years. Since then, relations have warmed with the arrival of Labour's Keir Starmer in Downing Street in July 2024.
On Saturday, the two leaders, accompanied by their German and Polish counterparts, issued an ultimatum to Vladimir Putin from Kiev demanding an unconditional one-month ceasefire. Britain is a key ally of France in supporting Ukraine, which was invaded by Russia in February 2022.
