Vinted, France's leading clothing retailer: a huge success in 5 key figures

It's a 2.0 thrift store that has overtaken Shein and Amazon. Far from being a small, private-access closet app, Vinted is now the leading clothing seller in France, according to the Fashion Institute's barometer (1).

As the ready-to-wear industry faces a profound crisis, the Lithuanian platform stands out for its continued growth, a rapidly expanding user base, and European-scale logistics development. Five figures to better understand its current market share.

Launched in France in 2013, Vinted has become the leading clothing retailer in France by volume in just a decade. By the end of 2024, the platform had approximately 23 million French users, nearly a third of the population, making France its largest global market. It accounts for more than 30% of its users.

According to the French Fashion Institute, Vinted ranks first among the top 15 market players by volume (number of items). It is followed by Amazon. Shein is fifth, and Temu is only 23rd.

While the ready-to-wear sector is in crisis , Vinted achieved a turnover of 813 million euros in 2024. An increase of 36% compared to 2023. Its net profit reached 77 million euros, a spectacular increase of more than 330%.

The group, based in Vilnius, Lithuania, employs more than 2,200 people. Thanks to its profits, the group recently diversified its services with the launch of Vinted Pay (an integrated payment solution) and Vinted Capital, an investment fund focused on the circular economy .

Transport accounts for 96% of the carbon footprint of a purchase made via Vinted, or around 1.28 kg of CO2 per delivery. The use of parcel relays (known as the PUDO model, for Pick Up & Drop Off ) could reduce these emissions by up to 62%. However, in France, the average distance to a relay point is 2.3 km, and a quarter of users access it by car, generating around 183 g of additional CO2 per journey, according to a study conducted by Vinted in 2023.

Conversely, the platform estimates that each purchase of a second-hand item of clothing avoids an average of 1.8 kg of CO2 compared to a new purchase.

Vinted ships more than 200 million parcels per year across Europe. Nearly 30% of transactions are cross-border, mainly between France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands.

To better coordinate these shipments, the company is developing Vinted Go, its own logistics platform, with the aim of connecting existing delivery services via a network of collection points, often in the form of automatic lockers.

Vinted occupies a dominant position in the French secondhand fashion market. According to a study by Joko published in March 2024, the platform represents approximately 60% of secondhand clothing sales in France, three times more than its main competitor, Leboncoin. This market share places Vinted far ahead of other players in the sector, ahead of consignment stores, flea markets, and other specialized platforms.

The second-hand market is experiencing significant growth in France. In 2024, it generated a turnover of €7 billion, with an annual growth rate of 12%. The fashion sector constitutes a significant portion of this market, representing €1.16 billion.

1 – The French Fashion Institute surveyed 1,250 people representative of the population each month for a year to measure the weight of textile brands on the French market, both online and in stores.
