Reindustrializing the United States: Donald Trump's uncertain gamble
This is the main objective of Donald Trump's customs policy: to attract foreign investment to reindustrialize the United States. "The army of millions and millions of human beings screwing together small components to make iPhones, that kind of thing is going to happen in America," promised US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on April 6, shortly after Donald Trump announced so-called "reciprocal" tariffs on April 2. The agreement unveiled Sunday, July 27, with the European Union (EU) provides for $600 billion (€525 billion) of additional investment on American soil. A few days earlier, Japan had committed to investing $500 billion in the country in its agreement signed with Washington . These commitments, however, remain unclear, both regarding the timeframe and the sectors concerned.
In recent weeks, several major European groups have announced the construction of factories on American soil, raising fears of a reduction in their activities on the Old Continent, or even an increase in offshoring to the benefit of the United States.
