Meurthe-et-Moselle. Opening on May 1st: Bakers and Florists Face the Law

For years, many bakeries and flower shops have opened on May ^1st and had their employees work, without any problems.

But, in 2024, the situation changed, with the verbalization by labor inspectors of five bakers in Vendée.

In the eyes of the law, May ^1st is not just another public holiday. According to the French Labor Code, it is a mandatory day off for all employees, except for those employed by a company that, "due to the nature of its activity, cannot interrupt work." This is the case for so-called service establishments, such as hospitals, transportation, hotels, and restaurants.
