Faced with a series of storms, Acapulco struggles to keep its head above water
Hit by a series of tropical storms and hurricanes, the famous Mexican city of Acapulco, in the state of Guerrero, can no longer see the end of the tunnel. On the front line are the poorest populations, who are struggling to rebuild and revive their economy based on fishing and tourism. Report from the Mexican newspaper “Proceso”.
In the last three years, the poorest populations of Acapulco and the coast of Guerrero state [in southwestern Mexico] have been hit by three hurricanes in succession, Otis , John and Erick.
And things are not expected to improve for these regions in the short or medium term, as more intense and frequent cyclones, worsening sea levels and a lasting drop in tourism are expected.
Food supplies, mattresses and blankets are what the authorities offer them after each disaster.
With Otis in 2023, Fernando Marcial saw the stars. In the middle of the night, violent winds ripped the roof off his home, high in the Solidaridad neighborhood. The torrents of stones swept away everything he owned, including his work equipment, fishing, patiently accumulated over the course of his life.
Not content with shredding boats and yachts, the sea swallowed up “more than 50 sailors” .
