Consumption: Fast food has conquered France

France remains a hotbed of conquest for fast-food chains. The American-style recipe for fast, cheap eating remains as tempting as ever.
A hundred people wait, not for a show or a meeting with a celebrity, but to taste the doughnuts of a famous brand. The American giant's first store in France, the craze is real. The American concept has nevertheless adapted to the French market, with less sweet recipes and pastries. Today, American franchises have 3,500 locations in France.
The French market leader remains McDonald's, with its first restaurant opening in 1979 in Strasbourg (Haut-Rhin). By 2000, there were 709, and today, 1,560. Fast-food restaurants are opening everywhere, with, for example, seven franchises in Beauvais (Oise), a city of just over 50,000 inhabitants. Many French people are fans. Fierce competition from American brands is forcing several independent restaurants to stand out. In France, fast-food restaurants now account for almost half of all restaurant outings.
