Nicknamed the "Learned Prince," Albert I of Monaco (November 13, 1848–June 26, 1922) marked his reign with an unwavering passion for science and oceanography. A pioneer, he led 28 exploration campaigns, sailing from the Arctic to the Azores. He founded the renowned Oceanographic Museum of Monaco and the Oceanographic Institute of Paris, thus making a decisive contribution to knowledge of the ocean floor. Beyond his scientific achievements, he was a political reformer, providing the principality with a constitution. His progressive vision and commitment to science make him a major figure in Monegasque history and a pioneer in ocean protection.
