The filmmaker, who was able to attend Cannes for the first time in fifteen years, was awarded for A Simple Accident , a chilling tragicomedy shot in secret that confronts an executioner with his victims. "The most important thing is the freedom of our country," he said upon receiving his award.
It was a no-brainer. In a Cannes Film Festival with a highly political tone, A Simple Accident by Iranian director Jafar Panahi appeared, from the moment it was screened, as the clear favorite for the Palme d'Or. Not only because his film, shot under the noses of the censors, is a direct attack on the Mullah regime. But also because its cinematic qualities, under such conditions, met all the criteria to earn such recognition from the jury of the 78th Cannes Film Festival.
