A television star has passed away. American comedian George Wendt, known for his portrayal of Norm Peterson on the hit series Cheers , died at his home on Tuesday, May 20, at the age of 76. His death was confirmed by his agents Melissa Nathan and Geoff Cheddy, according to Variety and the New York Times .

During his long career, he was nominated six times for Emmy Awards in the category "Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series" thanks to his role on Cheers, which he played for 11 seasons.

The actor was also known for small roles in Airplane and Forever Young. He was also a regular on "Saturday Night Live" in the 1990s.
