Brazil: The United States denies visas to judges in the Trump-backed Bolsonaro case

Donald Trump and the United States have reacted vehemently to the decision to have Jair Bolsonaro wear an electronic bracelet.
The United States has revoked the visa of the Brazilian judge leading the trial of Jair Bolsonaro , following his decision to force the far-right former Brazilian president to wear an electronic bracelet , US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Friday.
"Witch Hunt""Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes' political witch hunt against Jair Bolsonaro has created persecution and censorship that not only violates the fundamental rights of Brazilians, but extends beyond Brazilian shores to Americans," the US Secretary of State said in a statement.

Marco Rubio clarified that these US sanctions applied to all judges sitting on the Bolsonaro trial, as well as their close relatives. Jair Bolsonaro's trial for an alleged coup attempt against the current left-wing president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, is scheduled to conclude in the coming weeks. The 70-year-old former head of state (2019-2022) faces more than 40 years in prison.
In addition to wearing an electronic bracelet, Jair Bolsonaro is also forced to stay home on evenings and weekends, and is banned from using social media or contacting foreign embassies and authorities. Slamming a supposed "witch hunt" against his far-right ally, US President Donald Trump also threatened Brazil with a 50% tariff surcharge starting August 1st .
