Mother's Day is a very special day celebrated in different parts of the world . It's a day that honors motherhood and the love a family shares with its mother. However, unlike many other countries, there is one country in Latin America where it is celebrated in October. What is it and why is this?

Currently, Argentina is the only Latin American country where Mother's Day is celebrated in October. This commemoration takes place annually on the third Sunday of the tenth month of the calendar. According to El Diario AR, this all arose from the commemoration of Pope Pius XI, who maintained that October 11th was the day designated for the Divine Maternity of Mary.

Due to this situation, " it was decided that Mother's Day would be celebrated on the Sunday before or after that date, but over time, it was set to the third Sunday in October. This choice seeks to ensure that all families can honor their mothers on a non-working day, allowing the celebration to be even more meaningful," the aforementioned outlet noted.

" This choice is due to the fact that May is considered the 'Month of Mary' in the Catholic tradition, and many countries have adopted the American custom, which was established more than a century ago," they clarified.

Why is Mother's Day celebrated?

This commemoration began in 1907, the date on which the mother of one of the members of a women's movement passed away. Because of this issue, they requested that the government take this situation into account and make it a very special day. "Thus, Mother's Day was officially declared in 1914, under President Woodrow Wilson, and is still observed in the United States and other countries that joined the celebration, such as Colombia and Venezuela," NatGeo stated.
