A tragedy has struck Indian sport after 17-year-old Yashtika Acharya, a gold medallist at the National Youth Games in India , died after exercising at a gym.
Authorities said Acharya was crushed by the 600-pound (272 kg) dumbbell when she lost her balance while performing a squat.

The athlete was reportedly performing a lift under the supervision of her coach when she lost her balance, according to local media outlets such as the Times of India and The Indian Express.
“Yashtika was lifting weights at Power Headquarters gym under the supervision of her trainer. During the attempt, she suddenly lost her balance and the pole fell on her neck,” said police officer Vikram Tiwari of Naya Shahar police station, according to Press Trust of India.
"Other members of the gym rushed to remove the weight, while her trainer tried to perform CPR, but she showed no signs of recovery," he said.
As reported, the girl was rushed to hospital but was declared dead shortly after. The coach also suffered minor injuries in a desperate attempt to rescue Acharya. Her body was handed over to her family on Wednesday after an autopsy was performed, and they will not file any charges over the accident.
