The Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) announced that Mexican boxer Jaime Munguía tested positive for testosterone in a test conducted the day he defeated Frenchman Bruno Surace in a fight that was part of the Saúl Canelo Álvarez-headline card in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

According to the organization's report, which was released yesterday on the specialized media portal The Ring , sample A from the Tijuana native showed an adverse analytical result for the exogenous origin of testosterone metabolites after a urine test performed on May 4, when he defeated the European boxer by unanimous decision (116-112, 117-111 and 117-111).

In that bout, Munguía, who currently holds a record of 45 wins, 35 of them by knockout, and two losses, defeated Surace in a super middleweight rematch after being knocked out by the Frenchman in a fight held last December.

The 28-year-old player has 10 days to request analysis of his B sample. If the positive result is confirmed, he could be suspended.

For this fight, Munguía was trained by the renowned Eddy Reynoso, who trains Álvarez and commands the so-called Canelo Team .

This is the fourth time that a boxer trained by Reynoso, who in 2018 was recognized as the World Boxing Council's best trainer and the 2023 National Sports Award winner, has tested positive in an anti-doping test. The previous tests were Canelo himself (in 2018), Julio César Martínez (2019), both for clenbuterol, and Óscar Valdez (2021), for phentermine and diuretics.

Following the news, Munguía posted a video on social media in which he claimed to be a clean boxer.

"I'm surprised, like all of you, by what happened in the doping test. The truth is, I feel calm, very confident in my preparation, supplementation, and everything I did. Just to tell everyone that I'm a clean athlete, I have nothing to fear because I know I've done things right, and here I am, ready to take all the necessary tests ," he asserted.

He also released a statement confirming that he will request analysis of sample B.

“Throughout my career, I've undergone countless drug tests and have never tested positive. I was tested twice during the camp and both results were negative, so it was a huge surprise to receive this notification of an adverse finding.

Several experts have explained to me that there are multiple ways contamination can occur, and I am willing to submit to any retroactive testing to prove I have always been a clean athlete. I will not comment further until this process is concluded with the results of Test B , he noted.

For his part, Sucare stated, "I'm shocked by the news that Munguía tested positive for a banned substance. There's no room for cheating in boxing: the sport is already dangerous enough ." He demanded the fight result be immediately revoked and noted that the Mexican knew he couldn't beat him on equal terms .

Paris. Hometown hero Richard Gasquet ended his 23-year professional career by losing 6-3, 6-0, 6-4 to world number one Jannik Sinner in the second round of the French Open.

The 38-year-old Frenchman received a standing ovation and an honorary trophy during the post-match ceremony at Court Philippe Chatrier.

Gasquet had announced earlier this year that Roland Garros would be his last tournament.

I couldn't dream of a better ending than having my last match on this court. I'll continue to love tennis until the end of my life , he said.

The tennis player reached world number seven in 2007 and reached three Grand Slam semifinals: twice at Wimbledon and once at the US Open, but never reached the championship match. He won 16 titles on the ATP Tour and was part of the French team that lifted the Davis Cup in 2017.

He played more than a thousand matches during a career that began in 2002. This was his 22nd appearance at Roland Garros.

Novak Djokovic, meanwhile, dealt with a blister on his left big toe that required a medical timeout in the third set before sealing a 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (1) victory over Frenchman Corentin Moutet to remain on course for a record 25th career Grand Slam title.

Third-seeded Alexander Zverev defeated Dutchman Jesper de Jong 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-3.

In other results, Czech Jiri Lehecka defeated Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, and Kazakh Alexander Bublik upset ninth seed Alex de Miñaur of Australia 2-6, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2.

In the women's draw, second seed Coco Gauff defeated Czech Tereza Valentova 6-2, 6-4, while Paula Badosa (10) came from behind to eliminate Romanian Elena-Gabriela Ruse 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Meanwhile, Mexican Giuliana Olmos and British Lloyd Glasspool qualified for the second round of the mixed doubles by beating Australian Ellen Perez and Julian Cash of Great Britain 7-6 (2/7) and 6-4.

The Disciplinary Committee of the Mexican Football Federation sanctioned Celaya, of the Expansion League, with a two-match suspension at the Miguel Alemán Valdés stadium for the following season and a financial fine, after an altercation between fans who entered the field and security elements at the end of the quarterfinal match against Jaiba Brava - at the end of April - in which a person with a tear gas weapon was detected . The following day, the Liga de Expansión Mx issued a statement condemning the events and asked fans to enjoy the matches with passion and respect, always supporting the indications of the authorities at all times . After Tampico Madero's 1-0 victory in the first leg, both teams tied 0-0 in the second leg, with which the Jaiba Brava team booked their ticket to the semifinals of the 2025 Clausura tournament with an aggregate score of 1-0. Finally, the FMF Disciplinary Committee asked the Celaya club to ensure that situations of this nature do not occur again.
