Galatasaray will sue Mourinho for his comments after the derby: "They were jumping like monkeys"

Galatasaray will sue Mourinho for his comments after the derby: "They were jumping like monkeys"

However far José Mourinho travels, controversy seems to be his most faithful companion. The former coach of Real Madrid, Manchester United, Porto and Inter Milan is the current coach of Fenerbahçe. This Monday, he had to play against the leader of the Turkish league and bitter rival of the team, Galatasaray . After the match, Mourinho made several statements to the press that in a few minutes have set the networks on fire and provoked the anger of the affected club.

Istanbul derbies are usually synonymous with high intensity and Monday's match was intended to be a bit more relaxed by hiring a foreign referee as the first referee. In the midst of a reputational crisis, with harsh accusations against referees for bias, the Turkish Football Federation decided to take action in the matter "to put an end to the debates and not put our referee friends in a difficult position," said Ibrahim Haciosmanoglu, president of the TFF.

The match, which ended in a scoreless draw for both teams, increased Galatasaray's lead over Fenerbahce. Nevertheless, Mourinho decided to thank the TFF's decision not to appoint a national referee with a series of statements that have caused widespread rejection:

«Once again, I would like to thank the referee for his work in this match. If it had been a Turkish referee, after the dive in the first few minutes and the Galatasaray bench jumping around the pitch like monkeys ... With a Turkish referee we would have seen a yellow card in the first minute, and five minutes later I would have had to change the player. The referee's work today was perfect», were the controversial words of the Portuguese coach.

Several minutes later, Galatasaray posted a post on their Instagram in which they repeated the FIFA motto “#SayNoToRacism” on a black background, but they decided that the argument would not end there. On their X account they assured that they would take the coach to court for his words, indicating that “since he started in Turkey, José Mourinho has not stopped making derogatory statements towards the Turkish people.”

"We hereby formally declare our intention to initiate criminal proceedings in relation to the racist remarks and will lodge official complaints with UEFA and FIFA," the statement said.

Fenerbahce also agreed that his statements were not entirely accurate, although they maintain that their coach did not have a discriminatory intention nor do they consider him a racist.
