Luis Abinader attacks Amnesty International

The meeting between President Luis Abinader and former President Hipólito Mejía concluded Friday with a powerful and energetic message addressed to Amnesty International .

In a context in which the organization is demanding that the government cease its policy of mass deportations of Haitians , the Dominican president responded that Haiti has been abandoned by the international community .

"The country will continue doing what it's doing , which is respecting its immigration law and protecting the Dominican Republic ; let Amnesty go fight the gangs in Haiti ," the head of state expressed, visibly excited.

Since the repatriation of Haitians began, various sectors of the international community have insisted that national policies are discriminatory and violate human rights .

"Let them go fight the gangs in Haiti , let them go help them, and let them do what we've done; we've been calling on the international community to address this problem for three years," the president continued in an authoritarian tone.

Abinader indicated that the country must make the necessary decisions to safeguard its security .

These statements came at the end of the meeting between Luis Abinader and Hipólito Mejía , which took place today at the former president's residence.

Call at the Palace among the upcoming measures

President Luis Abinader announced that, once the technical committees' work concludes on July 23, he will summon all delegations and the press to the National Palace to directly present the conclusions of the thematic roundtables of the Economic and Social Council (CES).

According to the head of state, after the conclusion of the organization's talks, he will discuss the results with his predecessors, with the goal of reaching a unified position on the Haitian issue.

The president also highlighted that former presidents Mejía, Fernández, and Medina have shown a willingness to collaborate in developing a state policy to address the impact of the crisis in Haiti.

A meeting between respect and friendship

From the first moment they met, Abinader and Mejía made it clear that this would be a meeting with a mystique that transcended the official and the protocolary.

The head of the Executive arrived at the former president's residence at 10:45 a.m. to begin a conversation that lasted more than two and a half hours.

Abinader arrived without the traditional sirens that announce his arrival and with a much smaller entourage than usual. Mejía wore a blue jacket, while the president wore a white chacabana, the first object of jokes of the morning.

" I'll wear a shaggy jacket and you'll wear a shaggy jacket," was the expression the president was heard saying as he got out of the vehicle, and later, the two mocked each other for their differences in clothing.

As they posed for the official photo, Abinader exclaimed, "Today is Friday," and then they headed inside the host's home to begin their meeting.

The officials heard from the Economic and Social Council (ESC) commissioners about the progress of the working groups in various areas related to the crisis, such as migration, security, trade, and communications.

Mejía expressed his satisfaction with the president's visit and praised the harmony with which the negotiation process is being carried out. He said the talks are progressing with respect for the perspectives of the sectors involved and the leaders of the main political parties.

President Abinader also affirmed that this multisectoral dialogue process reflects a collective commitment to stability and the defense of national interests.

The meetings

This is the third meeting the president has held with his predecessors in the Executive Branch . On June 26, Abinader visited Danilo Medina at the National House of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), and on July 3, he met with Leonel Fernández at the headquarters of the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (Funglode).

These meetings stem from the joint session between President Abinader and former commanders Mejía, Fernández, and Medina, held on May 14 at the Ministry of Defense.

Through these talks, the Government seeks to strengthen a common stance in the face of the complex binational scenario and promote sustainable solutions within the framework of democratic respect and sovereignty.

In parallel with these visits, the CES has established six thematic roundtables to analyze the impact of the Haitian crisis on the country. The roundtable meetings are expected to conclude on July 23rd, and a final report will be presented.
