Sonora government cancels Day of the Dead celebrations after fire at Waldo's store in Hermosillo


MEXICO CITY (Apro) – The Sonora state government of Alfonso Durazo Montaño canceled the Day of the Dead festivities after the explosion and fire that took place today at a Waldo's store in Hermosillo, which resulted in the death of at least 23 people while another 12 were injured, some of them seriously.
In a statement released on social media, the Sonora administration announced the cancellation of a concert scheduled in the Bosque Urbano la Sauceda, “in solidarity with those going through this painful moment.”
“We deeply appreciate the understanding and solidarity of society in general, as well as all the musicians and collaborators involved in this event,” added the Durazo government, which hours earlier had extended its condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the tragedy.
The Hermosillo municipal government also canceled the festivities it had planned in Plaza Zaragoza, such as the Catrina contest and parade. “We share the sadness that grips our community,” the city council stated.
"This is a sad day for Sonora, especially for the families who lost a loved one in downtown Hermosillo. I respectfully join in the expressions of solidarity with them and with the entire community. The State Government will take all necessary actions to support the families and individuals affected by the explosion at the Waldo's store," Governor Alfonso Durazo said in a statement.
