A child died after being swept away by a river current after Hurricane Erick passed through Guerrero.

ACAPULCO, Gro. (apro).- As Hurricane Erick passed through Guerrero, a child died after being swept away by a river current in the municipality of San Marcos, on the Costa Chica, state authorities reported.
In addition, on La Bocana beach in the municipality of Marquelia, at least 50 restaurant huts were destroyed by the gusts of wind and high waves caused by the storm.
The incident occurred at 3:30 p.m. yesterday, Thursday, in the municipal seat of San Marcos.
Category 3 Hurricane Erick slammed into the Guerrero coast early Thursday, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to municipalities along the Costa Chica region.
Residents of San Marcos reported that a woman identified as Rosa N, 16 years old, who was carrying her son Ismael N, between one and two years old, tried to cross the Nexpa River that runs through the town, but the force of the current swept them away.
The mother, as she does every day, tried to cross the riverbed to travel from the El Cántaro neighborhood to the Quinta Sección neighborhood, where she lives, but the depth of the current and the force increased by the rains swept her away.
Neighbors managed to rescue the woman, but not the child. The child was searched for by residents and later found dead.
An hour and a half earlier, Morena Governor Evelyn Salgado issued a press release, ordered to be published in Guerrero media outlets, celebrating the state's clean bill of health due to the presence of rainfall and winds resulting from Hurricane Erick.
After learning of the child's death, the president did not comment on the matter, nor did any of her officials who remained active on social media.
The head of the Secretariat of Comprehensive Management and Civil Protection of the state of Guerrero, Roberto Arroyo Matus, confirmed the death after an inquiry.
The meteorological phenomenon caused severe damage, including road and bridge closures, sinkholes, flooding of homes, destruction of restaurants and beach huts, and power and cell phone service outages in the municipalities of Ometepec, Cuajinicuilapa, Gualapa, San Nicolás, Ayutla de los Libres, Marquelia, and Florendio Villareal de la Costa Chica.
Eight other municipalities on the Costa Chica, as well as in the Central, Tierra Caliente, and Montaña regions, suffered considerable damage.
