“He had federal protection”: Sheinbaum condemned the vile assassination of the Mayor of Uruapan

MEXICO CITY (apro) – Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo asserted that Carlos Manzo, the mayor of Uruapan who was murdered last night during a public event, was in communication with territorial commanders of the National Defense Secretariat and the National Guard, and that “he had federal protection.”
This protection did little to prevent the attack against him in broad daylight during the Day of the Dead celebrations; the mayor's bodyguards killed one of the assailants and arrested two others. The assassination occurred after Manzo urged the federal government to combat the criminal groups that control that region of Michoacán.
“I condemn in the strongest possible terms the vile assassination of the mayor of Uruapan,” the governor stated on social media, where she uploaded a photograph with the military and civilian commanders responsible for security policy, in which Alejandro Gertz Manero, the head of the Attorney General's Office (FGR), did not appear.
“Today I convened the Security Cabinet to guarantee support for Michoacán and to ensure there is no impunity,” said Sheinbaum, who announced that there will be a press conference this Sunday to “transparently report on the progress in the investigation of this case.”
“Since the beginning of this administration, we have reinforced the Security Strategy,” Sheinbaum insisted, adding that “these regrettable events motivate us to strengthen it even further.”
