Canine team graduates to prevent screwworms

To address potential cases of the cattle screwworm (CWS) in the state, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER Jalisco), through the Agency for Health, Safety and Agri-Food Quality (ASICA Jalisco), has incorporated two canine teams.
The canine units are part of the 73rd Generation of the Canine Training Center (CEACAN) of the National Service for Agri-Food Health, Safety, and Quality (SENASICA), whose graduation took place in the municipality of Tecámac, State of Mexico.
The dogs, named “ Hummer ” and “ Havana ,” are trained to sniff out and, where appropriate, identify cattle, pigs, sheep, or goats with the presence of larvae, before undergoing visual inspection by an expert.
The two canine teams consist of an ASICA officer and a trained dog, who will assist in the strategy for detecting potential animals with worm infestations in the corral authorized by the Federal Government for the inspection and treatment of GBG in the municipality of Totatiche.
The teams will be tasked with detecting positive cases of animals possibly infected with worms in Jalisco.
