How Colombia is progressing in the inclusion of financial intelligence in the banking sector

Artificial intelligence (AI) is key to transforming the banking sector by optimizing processes, improving digital security, detecting fraud, and offering personalized products ; however, its implementation comes with risks such as operational vulnerabilities, bias, data breaches, and identity theft.
That's why international regulations have been created, such as the European Union's AI Law , which classifies systems according to risk levels (unacceptable, high, limited, and minimal) and imposes obligations on providers and users.
According to a report by Asobancaria, Colombia has adopted an approach based on ethical principles, transparency, and responsible development, with initiatives such as Conpes 3975 and the use of regulatory sandboxes that promote innovation, strengthening data infrastructure, and developing human talent , positioning itself among the Latin American leaders.

The association states that the development of regulations for AI and its ethical and responsible use must "continue to evolve toward an approach that continues to stimulate innovation, without hindering the progress made by the banking system." For Asobancaria, Colombia has stood out, ranking among the top in ratings such as the Artificial Intelligence and Democratic Values Index, placing 22nd out of 120 countries.
As a fundamental pillar for AI regulation, Colombia seeks to improve productivity, promote citizen well-being, and generate cross-cutting enablers for sectoral digital transformation.
He said three sets of strategies have been identified to promote the use of AI in all sectors of Colombian society. These strategies focus on enhancing the country's AI capabilities, promoting its use in research, development, and innovation, encouraging the adoption of AI technologies in various sectors, and improving overall AI governance.
