The assassination of Uribe Turbay, the first assassination of a presidential candidate in more than three decades, has shaken the presidential campaign less than a year before the elections and rekindled fears that Colombia could repeat episodes of political violence like those of 1990, when Luis Carlos Galán, Bernardo Jaramillo Ossa, and Carlos Pizarro were assassinated.
