Yucatecan Russel Acosta, North American minimum weight champion: wins in Kanasín

In a torrid fight, with no mercy given or demanded, Yucatecan Russel Acosta Silveira was proclaimed the new minimum weight champion of the North American Boxing Federation.
A narrow victory that came down to the wire allowed the hometown fighter to ascend to the throne, in an evening held Friday night at the “Alfonso Palma Carrillo” Sports Center in Kanasín.
The final round of ten was an avalanche of striking attempts from both sides, putting both men in danger of falling, but they held their own and finished to a standing ovation. Unfortunately, there was a brawl at ringside , with whistles between local fans and Jalisco fans supporting "El Charrito."
The judges' cards were as follows: Raúl Jiménez, 97-92, for Acosta; Mauro Chalé, 96-96, and
Jorge Martín, 97-93, for Acosta
, decreeing success for the kanasinero.
Commissioner José Manzur Argüelles, representing the World Boxing Council , which endorsed the fight, awarded the belt to Acosta Silveira, amid much celebration. The city's mayor, Edwin Bojórquez , was present at the presentation of the belt to the local fighter.
The fight didn't have a clear dominant force. Both men went out to give each other a try, and that's how the entire fight went. In the tenth, Russel emerged with a cut eyebrow.

Some 2,000 people attended the event, which marked the return of professional boxing to Kanasín.
