In early January of this year, the US Supreme Court upheld a law requiring TikTok to divest from its parent company , China's ByteDance, or face closure in the country.

After the initial postponement and various offers to cancel the application, President Donald Trump has extended the cancellation period again.

Trump postpones TikTok shutdown

"I just signed the Executive Order extending the shutdown of TikTok for 90 days (until September 17, 2025). Thank you for your attention to this matter!" the president said.

In addition, Donald Trump displayed the document with his signature on his social media, where the deadline for applying sanctions to TikTok is extended , suspending legal actions.

“The enforcement delay specified in section 2(a) of Executive Order 14166 of January 20, 2025 (Application of the Protect Americans from Apps Controlled by Foreign Adversaries Act to TikTok) (...) is extended to September 17, 2025 ,” the document reads.

What happened between TikTok and the United States?

A regulation passed in April 2024 required a “qualified divestiture” by ByteDance to transfer control to an investor in a country not considered an adversary by the U.S. TikTok challenged the law, claiming it violated the First Amendment by restricting free speech.

On January 7, Donald Trump expressed interest in temporarily lifting the app ban with an executive order, proposing to extend the deadline by 60 to 90 days to facilitate a favorable sale. He proposed breaking up the company and allowing US firms to acquire parts of the business .

Finally, on April 2, Amazon submitted its first formal offer to acquire TikTok. That same day, Tim Stokely, founder of OnlyFans, in partnership with the Hbar Foundation, also offered to buy the platform through his startup Zoop.
