Toledo Castle is a hidden gem of Castile-La Mancha's medieval history.

The province of Toledo is one of the places in Spain with the highest concentration of medieval castles . Among plains, olive groves, and mountain ranges, various buildings from the 12th to 15th centuries stand, witnessing the Reconquista and the military and feudal conflicts that marked the history of Castile-La Mancha.
Today, many of them have been restored or are simply in ruins, as is the case with the castle of Almonacid. This fortress dates back to 848 and is located south of the municipality of the same name.
A ruined castle with a presence in battles
As a clear example of what Toledo's military defenses were like during the Reconquista, the Almonacid Castle is a fortress of Muslim origin located on top of a hill at a height of 400 meters. The construction became A prison in the 1300s, where illustrious figures such as Alfonso Enríquez de Castilla, Count of Gijón, were imprisoned. Furthermore, its territory was stained with blood on several occasions after witnessing various battles , the most significant being one that took place in 1809 during the Peninsular War, when General Venegas killed 6,000 combatants of the invading army.
Today, the castle lies in ruins, with the remains of its battlements and its large keep preserved. Its silhouette is shaped by a walled perimeter that dominates the La Mancha skyline. Inside, we find a very spacious parade ground with the keep at its center.
How to visit Almonacid Castle?
Despite being a ruined structure, it is freely accessible and can be visited via a short hiking trail that departs from the village. However, you must remain alert, as the terrain is strewn with rocks and uneven ground. What most captivates visitors are the spectacular views of the village from the top of the hill.
