Now after the CJNG

Now after the CJNG

Although this is a decision based on U.S. national security issues, the initiation of punishments against several drug traffickers and cartels within the framework of the new classification of terrorists will have inevitable impacts within Mexico.

In recent months, we have been overwhelmed with information against the Sinaloa Cartel of El Chapo Guzmán and his sons, while at the same time, DEA reports revealed that the Jalisco New Generation Cartel of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias El Mencho , was moving throughout the country with excessive ease and off the radar of security forces.

Once the United States was putting enough pressure to dismantle the Sinaloa Cartel , the Treasury Department launched a persecution program against the CJNG and especially against its leader El Mencho , although amid unverified reports that he would be very ill or even dead for some time, but with a criminal structure that has led him to deification.

The White House Treasury Department's decision, in the context of characterizing drug cartels as terrorists, will become a very serious problem of geopolitical and border pressure on Mexico, almost equal to or even greater than the persecution of El Chapo and its effects, which have now plunged Sinaloa into a state of chaos and violence.

The White House's decision to characterize the cartels as terrorists came after Mexico failed to change its security strategy based on "hugs, not bullets." US pressure led to the extradition of El Chapo and his son, Ovidio, and the extradition of another son of El Chapo , as well as the kidnapping of Ismael El Mayo Zambada.

The outlook is for a new wave of violence, much worse than that of the Sinaloa Cartel , because the Jalisco Cartel has been distributing videos showing off its firepower. But the problem is that the US strategy against El Mencho is underway and will generate instability throughout the country.

Ground Zero

  • In the superficial context of a morning press conference, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced a "general agreement" with the United States on security, migration, and trade. And Vice Foreign Minister Christopher Landau has already said there are understandings with Mexico to increase security cooperation. These are all statements, and there is no concrete information.
