Hurricane Melissa leaves 9 dead in the Caribbean; Trump says he promises aid for Jamaica

Jamaica was declared a disaster zone after Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm, struck, leaving more than 530,000 people without electricity and causing at least three deaths in the country .

So far, it has been Three deaths were reported in Haiti , two in Panama and one in the Dominican Republic, resulting from the storm's strong winds and rain.

The most affected municipalities in Jamaica are Clarendon , Manchester , Saint Elizabeth and Westmoreland , where many communities remain isolated and the roads are impassable .

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness declared the country a "disaster zone" on Tuesday after Melissa made landfall in Westmoreland and weakened to a Category 4 hurricane. According to the Jamaica Public Services Company (JPS), more than 77% of customers remain without power.

DONALD TRUMP ANNOUNCES SUPPORT FOR JAMAICA

US President Donald Trump announced that his country is ready to provide “humanitarian” aid to Jamaica and described the storm as exceptionally powerful.

“I’ve never seen numbers like this. A little while ago I saw that the winds were reaching 195 miles per hour (314 kilometers per hour). I’ve never seen anything like this. It’s literally knocking down everything in its path , he told reporters aboard Air Force One, while flying from Japan to South Korea .

He also emphasized that Category 5 hurricanes are “not normal” and added, “We have to, so we are monitoring the situation closely and are ready to act. It is causing enormous damage right now, as we speak.”
