August reports 21,000 formal jobs; slowdown continues

Formal employment showed a favorable pace, with the creation of 21,750 jobs registered with the Mexican Social Security Institute in August.
According to ManpowerGroup's analysis, the trend of job creation continues below previous years, since the figure for August 2025 is the lowest recorded in more than 20 years, only behind the loss of 22,018 jobs in 2008 .
"There is a cautious atmosphere in the markets, which is reflected in hiring intentions. To create jobs, we need investment, and attracting investment requires signaling legal certainty and stability to generate confidence," said Mónica Flores, president of ManpowerGroup.
ManpowerGroup's employment outlook survey found that six out of 10 employers in the country report experiencing a significant impact on hiring due to the current economic uncertainty.
So far in 2024, 216,538 formal jobs have been created. Cumulatively, for all of 2025, between 100,000 and 150,000 job opportunities are expected.
For the second consecutive year, temporary jobs fell short of the historic low of 10,000 for August, with 7,487 jobs reported this year, slightly higher than the 6,989 temporary positions in 2024.
Likewise, permanent employment barely surpassed 14,000 formal jobs, the third lowest figure on record, surpassing only the 8,000 such positions in 2009 and the loss of 36,000 in 2008.
"We have a greater number of people registered with the IMSS, but thanks to the formalization of people working on digital platforms, it's not a sign that the number of formal jobs the country has needed for decades has been created, which is more than one million formal jobs per year," he said.
