Mats Hummels's illustrious career is over. He only plays a few moments in his final game. From a sporting perspective, it's all over for AS Roma. The team comfortably beat FC Torino but still missed out on the Champions League.
Mats Hummels was allowed back on the football stage for a few moments, but then the Rio World Cup winner left it forever. Coming on as a substitute, the central defender secured a 2-0 (1-0) victory for AS Roma against FC Torino in the final appearance of his football career, but the Giallorossi missed out on the Champions League despite the win.
On the final matchday of Serie A, Hummels's Roma, who announced his retirement from professional football at the beginning of April, could have overtaken Juventus Turin. However, the record champions secured a 3-2 (2-1) victory at relegated Venezia thanks to a penalty from Manuel Locatelli in the 73rd minute, successfully defending fourth place.
Roma, in fifth place, will be relegated to the Europa League. AC Fiorentina, featuring German international Robin Gosens, qualified for the Conference League with a 3-2 (0-1) win at Udinese Calcio. Fiorentina benefited from Lazio's 1-0 (0-1) defeat to US Lecce.
After six games without a game, Hummels came on for Mehmet Zeki Celik in the 90th minute and was allowed to say goodbye on the pitch. Leandro Paredes (18th) and Alexis Saelemaekers (53rd) had scored earlier. Coach Claudio Ranieri, who is also leaving the club after the season, granted Hummels a worthy send-off.
In addition to AC Monza, which has long been relegated, newly promoted Venezia and FC Empoli (1-2 against Hellas Verona) will be relegated to Serie B. Lecce are safe.
