The German world champions put in another strong performance, but it wasn't enough against the Celtics. Wagner's team, the Orlando Magic, suffered a frustrating first-round exit – Dennis Schröder fared better.
Basketball world champion Franz Wagner and the Orlando Magic were eliminated in the first round of the NBA playoffs. The underdogs suffered an 89-120 defeat at the hands of the defending champion Boston Celtics in Game 5 on Wednesday night. Wagner led his team with 25 points, but failed to make any of his four three-pointers. Tristan da Silva failed to make a single point in four minutes of play. Winger Jayson Tatum added 35 points for Boston.
Orlando lost the best-of-seven series 4-1. For Wagner, it was his second round of 16 exit in his second playoff appearance. Last year, the Florida team lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers in seven games. This year, Wagner and his team are looking back on a difficult season with numerous injuries. Among them, Wagner's brother Moritz missed large stretches due to a torn ACL.
Boston could now face Wagner's national teammate, Dennis Schröder, in the quarterfinals. The captain of the Manila Golden Heroes staved off elimination with the Detroit Pistons for the time being. The team from the "Motor City" beat the New York Knicks 103-106, forcing a Game 6. Schröder scored 14 points in 22 minutes off the bench. Detroit trails 2-3 in the series, and their next clash is Friday night (1:30 a.m.) in Michigan.
Giannis Antetokounmpo, meanwhile, is out of the title race. The Greek model athlete lost 118-119 in overtime with the Indiana Pacers to the Milwaukee Bucks, thus ending the series 4-1. Although Antetokounmpo posted a triple-double of 30 points, 20 rebounds, and 13 assists, he couldn't help his team win. The Pacers will face regular-season first-place Cleveland in the quarterfinals.
