Five minutes before halftime, the game was over for Gwinn, and there are serious concerns that he has a serious injury to his left knee. The German superstar from FC Bayern Munich has already suffered two cruciate ligament tears, one on each side.

The DFB leader must have been impressed by how her replacement, Carlotta Wamser, performed almost unprepared in her role as right-back. She was surely even more impressed by the way Jule Brand, led the way, overcoming the shock after halftime and putting in a performance that was undeterred, rewarded by a third consecutive win without conceding a goal. And thus, the opening match of the European Championship was a success.

The much-cited team spirit has been evident in Herzogenaurach in recent weeks, for example, during the visit of pop star Wolfgang Petry, which went viral on social media. Petry produced the hit remake "Verlieben, verloren, vergessen, verzeihen" (Falling in love, lost, forgotten, forgiven) before the Poland match. This time, however, the team spirit was evident on the pitch under complicated circumstances.

Because all the national team players felt particularly motivated to support their captain, who was possibly seriously injured but, above all, emotionally affected. "Now more than ever for Giuli," as match winner Jule Brand put it. Substitute Selina Cerci wore her captain's number 7 jersey after the final whistle.

Gwinn is expected to represent a new generation of successes as the face of the team. She has already established a strong bond with national coach Christian Wück, which has significantly strengthened their trust in him and in each other.

This is now having an impact: Her teammates have continued the spirit of solidarity she helped to shape. An important factor for teams that want to make it far in a tournament, even after significant setbacks.
