European Championship shock: Schüller comforts injured captain Gwinn – what she tells her

Germany starts with a 2-0 win against Poland, but in the first half, the team loses its key player, Giulia Gwinn (26). Shortly before she is substituted, Lea Schüller whispers something in her ear.
An emotional moment followed when her Bayern teammate Lea Schüller (27) hugged her as she left the field and whispered something in her ear. The two are not only teammates, but also close friends who have played together at FC Bayern for years. Schüller later revealed on the ARD microphone what she said to Gwinn in this moving moment.

After the match, Lea Schüller spoke openly on the ARD microphone about the emotional moment with Giulia Gwinn: "I just told her to stay calm because she doesn't know what it is. When you're in pain, it's not always easy. I told her I'm there for her."
An MRI scan on Saturday morning (July 5, 2025) in Zurich will determine the true severity of the injury. However, concerns are high: The 26-year-old is at risk of suffering the third cruciate ligament tear of her career – again in her left knee. She already suffered a cruciate ligament tear in 2022, which caused her to miss the 2023 World Cup.

Both vice-captain Janina Minge and goalscorer Jule Brand spoke of a "shock," while Linda Dallmann said she was "incredibly sorry."
After the game, national coach Christian Wück confirmed in an interview with ARD that Gwinn's knee was affected: "We all hugged her and wished her good luck. The MRI is tomorrow. Her knee is affected. She prevented us from conceding a goal, which we have to give her credit for. We're keeping our fingers crossed that it's not too serious."
