2025 World Athletics Championships: Germany's schedule, athletes & competitions
From September 13 to 21, the German athletics team will compete against the world's elite at the World Championships in Tokyo. Where does Germany stand after last year's Olympics (four medals) and the disappointing 2023 World Championships in Budapest, when they failed to win any medals?

Germany is represented in Tokyo with a well-balanced sprint squad: Experienced athletes like Gina Lückenkemper , Rebekka Mayer , and Manuel Bredau are complemented by young up-and-comers like Owen Ansah , Lucas Ansah-Peprah , and Owe Fischer-Breiholz . The best medal prospects are in the women's 4x100-meter relay. Fischer-Breiholz is considered the most exciting individual contender in the 400-meter hurdles. Final finishes in the classic 100-, 200-, and 400-meter sprints are realistic, but podium finishes require top form and perfect races.

In the longer-distance running events, the German team travels to Tokyo with a mix of veterans and promising talent. Among the most experienced athletes is Gesa Krause in the 3000m steeplechase, who, despite injury setbacks, remains one of the most dangerous finalists in the world. In addition, there are several athletes with realistic chances of a place in the final or even the top 8, such as Robert Farken and young talent Jolanda Kallabis in the 1500m, Mohamed Abdilaahi in the 5000m, and Lea Meyer , who is strong in both the steeplechase and the 5000m.

The German competitors are unlikely to win medals in the race walk or the marathon. Jonathan Hilbert (35 km) and Richard Ringer (marathon) are likely to achieve good placings, while Christopher Linke has a chance of reaching the finals in both race walks. Amanal Petros, with his class, can also target a top-10 finish in the marathon.

Olympic champion Malaika Mihambo is among the favorites in the long jump. There are also hopes of reaching the finals in the high jump and triple jump, although the competition in Tokyo is extremely high-caliber. Max Heß (triple jump) and Simon Batz (long jump) are in top form and could advance to the final and the top 8. The other athletes are solidly positioned, but are more in the role of gaining international experience and showing off in the finals.

Germany has several options in the throwing disciplines. Germany has a strong team in the all-around competition. Vanessa Grimm showed a solid performance in 2025, recently coming close to her personal best in Poland with 6249 points. As was the case at the 2023 World Championships, where she finished sixth, a top-8 finish is realistic. Sandrina Sprengel returned from an injury break with a personal best of 6315 points and can aim for a top-10 finish in Tokyo.
In the men's competition , Leo Neugebauer , the German record holder (8,961 points) and Olympic silver medalist from Paris 2024, arrives with clear medal chances. Niklas Kaul , the 2019 World Champion and 2022 European Champion, has confirmed his form and remains a dangerous competitor with his strong throwing disciplines. Till Steinforth , who finished fifteenth at the 2024 Olympics, continues to gain experience and could move toward the top 10 with a consistent performance.
