The first group of white South Africans has landed in the United States. Deputy Secretary of State Chris Landau welcomed them as "good seed."

They stood somewhat lost in a semicircle, holding small US flags. Some waved the Star Spangled Banner and smiled, appearing relieved. Others were visibly tired, shocked at having arrived in a foreign country that would now become their new home. It was a long flight from Johannesburg across the Atlantic to Washington, with a stopover in Tanzania.
