Sahra Wagenknecht's alliance narrowly failed to clear the five percent hurdle in the federal election.

Despite the BSW's defeat in the federal election, Sahra Wagenknecht's party retains its most important major donor: Thomas Stanger, a businessman living in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on the Baltic Sea, again donated millions to the BSW in April—to be precise, €2.048 million. This is according to the German Bundestag's publication of major donations.
Stanger had already attracted attention last year when he donated €990,000 to the Sahra Wagenknecht coalition in January and €4.09 million in March – a total of around €5 million. No other party had received that much money from a single donor.
The BSW narrowly failed to clear the five percent hurdle in the federal election on February 23, receiving 4.98 percent. The party has contested the result and is demanding a recount.
Political parties in Germany finance themselves primarily through membership fees, government funding, and donations. Major donations are defined as amounts of €35,000 or more. Parties must immediately report such amounts to the President of the Bundestag, who will then publish this information promptly.
